27-29 February 2013

Dorsett Subang Hotel, Subang Jaya, Selangor

Forest loss and degradation is the root cause of many environmental problems. These include hydrological changes, erosion of agricultural land, biodiversity loss and climate change. On economic and social justice grounds, many countries have seen the struggle for equity in access to forest resources and as well as organized social movements promoting biodiversity conservation. Malaysia is no exception to these trends.

SEACON supports Transparency International Malaysia’s Forest Governance and Integrity Project (TIM-FGI), which is an adoption programme for threatened forest sites in Malaysia in 2012 in collaboration with various stakeholders, to ensure the conservation of the remaining forests for future generations.

The National Conference brings together the government, civil society and the corporate sector to develop strategies and recommendations for the conservation of the remaining forests and to save threatened forest sites in the country.

The Conference outcome will include a Manifesto on People, Forests and Sustainability that will be submitted to the government of Malaysia.

The National Conference is supported by coalition members and partners:

Centre for Orang Asli Concerns (COAC); Empower; Era Consumer; Environmental Protection Society Malaysia; Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations; Institute of Foresters, Malaysia; Southeast Asia Council for Food Security and Fair Trade; My Khatulistiwa; Malaysian Nature Society; Tenaganita; The Association for the Promotion of Human Rights; Treat Every Environment Special; Foundation for Community Studies and Development; Bar Council (Committee on Orang Asli Rights); Network of Orang Asli Villages in Peninsular Malaysia; Human Rights Commission of Malaysia; Dr. Hezri A.
