Sri-Lovely Organic Rice Farm

SEACON took part in a workshop on pre-and postharvest management of rice was organized by SRI-Mas, UKM, UPM, GrainPro Inc, KEDA and Department of Agriculture.

The workshop was hosted at the organic rice farm SRI-Lovely in Kampung Lintang, Kedah, with a group of almost 30 participants that included young aspiring farmers from MADA Rice Training Center, Koperasi Agro Belantek Sik Sdn. Bhd., BERNAS, FTC, MARDI, UKM, UPM, UUM, and NS Nature Rice.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The guests were welcomed to the organic rice farm by Haji Marzuki Mat Zin from KEDAwith a brief introduction to the ongoing activities and the history of the establishment ofthe center. Presentations were then delivered throughout the day on topics including ricevarieties, pre and postharvest management systems, quality of the grain and food safety En. Wahid from MARDI (Kedah) was amongst the speakers as well presenting on the mechanisation of pre and postharvest activities for better management of rice and paddy.

This was followed by Prof Madya Dr Siti Hajar Ahmad from UPM who delivered a talk on the different processes involved in the postharvest management and storage of paddy and rice.

In an engaging presentation by En. Mohd Roslan Bani Amin and Prof Dr Aminah Abdullah, the different varieties of rice were introduced to the guests. This talk also highlighted theimportance of maintaining standardised qualities for grading rice and enhancing the food safety of these commodities.

System of rice intensification (SRI) was addressed by Captain (R.) Zakaria Kamantasha,who gave the guests a tour of the rice production practices at the SRI-Lovely organic and introduced the MRQ-74, Malaysia’s new fragrant rice variety.

Installation of GrainPro Solar Bubble Dryer and G-HF Coccon was exhibited for the participants and a demonstration was conducted by GrainPro Inc. representative Joel Datur (Read More on this technology).

Closing remarks were delivered by SRI-Mas vice president Pn. Noorazimah Taharim who warmly thanked the guests and the hosts and invited all to join the upcoming SEA Regional Conference on SRI in May 2015 to be held in the State of Kedah, Malaysia.
