Calling Volunteers supporting farming community!

Youth with Purpose. Connect with farmers.

Experience unique food and culture in the highlands of Sarawak.

Batch 1: January 14-23, 2017

Batch 2: August 8-18, 2017

Rice is a staple in Malaysian meals, but how much do you know about its production and the challenges the rice sector faces?

As society becomes increasingly money-oriented along with the progression of time, we lose many of our traditional heritages. In Bario, the introduction of mechanised paddy farming has brought socio-economic changes in the community. Traditional paddy farming practices, an essential aspect of the Kelabit culture, face new challenges.

Can traditional cultures stand the test of time and economically sustain the Bario farming community? WHEE and the Southeast Asian Council for Food Security and Fair Trade (SEACON) believe that the answer to that is yes. What is needed for this to happen is that conducive food, agriculture, and trade policies must exist at the domestic, regional, and international levels.

Mark your calendar for January and August 2017 and join us in the beautiful paddy fields of Bario to change the way rice is produced as you gain a different perspective to society and life.

The 3rd ASEAN Food Trade Forum: Food Security and ASEAN Economic Community

Alor Setar, Kedha, Malaysia : 24-25 November

The ASEAN Food Trade Forum examined the implication of AEC trade and food security in the ASEAN region and identified policy options that deepen and diversify food trade consistent with the AEC framework. The participants were ASEAN governments and trading partners, food value chain actors, academia, NGOs, and development partners.

Session 1 : Situation, outlook, and policy scenarios of food sector in ASEAN.

The Session 1 was an introduction about the situation of the food sector in ASEAN Region. “Agricultural production centres have begun to shift in relative importance; trade has increased faster than in previous decades with an apparent fall in concentration of both exporters and importers; and there has been a significant shift in prices. For agricultural production has been strong and has flowed into an increase in the agro-food net export position. Both producers, for their incomes, and consumers, for food supplies, are becoming increasing reliant on world markets. The importance for ASEAN members of stable international markets is thus increasing. But with a remaining reliance on rice production, the continued government intervention in these markets regionally puts producers and consumers at greater risk.”

Jared Greenville, Senior Agricultural Policy analyst, OECD

Dorsett Subang Hotel, Subang Jaya, Selangor

Forest loss and degradation is the root cause of many environmental problems. These include hydrological changes, erosion of agricultural land, biodiversity loss and climate change. On economic and social justice grounds, many countries have seen the struggle for equity in access to forest resources and as well as organized social movements promoting biodiversity conservation. Malaysia is no exception to these trends.

SEACON supports Transparency International Malaysia’s Forest Governance and Integrity Project (TIM-FGI), which is an adoption programme for threatened forest sites in Malaysia in 2012 in collaboration with various stakeholders, to ensure the conservation of the remaining forests for future generations.

SEACON sets to empower ASEAN farmers PDF Print E-mail
Written by admin
Thursday, 21 February 2013 05:45

Food insecurity is still an endemic issue in many parts of ASEAN region. Despite being one the main food-producing region in the world, ASEAN is still host to millions of farmers that are still competitively disadvantaged and vulnerable to food insecurity. One of the main constraint for achieving food security is the absence of mechanisms for farmers to actively play a part in making in-situ or on-farm improvements or managing their own farm risks due to the lack of access to the relevant technology, including information, knowledge and skills that allow them to do so.

1st NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION (SRI)- MALAYSIA

5-6 July, 2011
Palm Garden Hotel IOI Resort, Putrajaya.

BACKGROUND
Rice security of Malaysia has come under scrutiny following the 2008 food crises.  Rice for Malaysia is not only a matter of food security but also regarded as a matter of national security and roots of Malaysian culture and heritage.  The issues and concerns related to making rice supply available, accessible and affordable to Malaysians have been frequently cited as the main reasons for increasing local rice production in the move towards achieving self-sufficiency goals.  Hence, technology and methods of production have moved towards so-called “modern agriculture” and high-yielding rice varieties that can withstand climate change and promise high returns to farmers.
